Trend To Try: Ponchos + Capes 10.31.16 Darby Rush

Recently we did a post on fashionable and classic transitional fall coats.  A big trend this season, and one we have fully embraced the past few years, is the flirty, fun, and super-comfortable poncho and its cousin the cape.  Ponchos and capes are typically lighter in weight than jackets and can easily be worn both indoors and out.  Super versatile, you can easily layer sweaters underneath for chillier days.  Plus, when can something so ridiculously comfy and cozy add instant drama to your outfit without any effort? They are simple to style and once in your wardrobe, you will reach for these chic toppers again and again!

Go for the elegant and stylish monochromatic look.  These butter-soft cashmere ponchos in heavenly blues will elevate a pair of jeans to the next dimension!

Historically, ponchos are known to be more casual than capes.  This heathered taupe and cream poncho with its textured weave and flirty fringe is the perfect companion to take when heading to the Del Ray Farmers market, football game, or simply to view the beautiful fall foliage!

The details in this gorgeous blush pink cashmere sweater are amazing.  The rustic leather buckles on the cowl neck is reminiscent of the Wild West, and you can button the sides together to make a poncho’s version of sleeves.  This can easily be worn with denim or, for a more dramatic look, wear white jeans!

These capes, with their heathered fall colors, windowpane stitching, and fantastic fringe, stand alone.  The fit is similar to a cardigan, so it will easily stay around your shoulders.  So chic, so soft, so gorgeous…they speak for themselves

Trending: Over-the-Knee-Boots — Can They Really Work for Me? 10.25.16 Meg Lombardo

Typically, I’m not one to adopt a trend quickly. I first see it either in a fashion magazine or online and then watch to see how it’s translated into more mainstream fashion. Sometimes, I’ll decide a trend isn’t for me, as not every trend is right for every body. Trends should provide inspiration for our style, rather than drive it, and most of all, keep fashion fun!

Appearing several years ago, and continuing to soar in popularity, over-the-knee boots are everywhere. Models make them look so effortless, but they are challenging, especially if your legs aren’t a mile long and very slim. After committing to see if they are a trend reserved for a select few, I surprisingly learned they can work, and even flatter (for real!), different body types using a few basic styling techniques.

Creating a long, lean line using the boot as the base was key for me. I opted to use tights, leggings, and jeans — all in dark colors since the boot is black — to help create a slim line that started at the bottom of the boot. I wasn’t comfortable wearing the boot without this layer and exposing skin, so if over-the-knee boots intimidate you, consider putting a thin layer underneath and style from there. The slim line created on the bottom allowed me to add some length, volume and/or interest on top, and balance out each look.  To prevent bunching at the ankle or above the boot, keep any layer under the boot as thin as possible.

A black opaque tight is the perfect base layer for something that might be considered slightly dressy, or elevated, as it’s thinner than a legging and, depending on the light, can sometimes can reveal a hint of leg. The Bailey 44 shift combines tweed and leather to create a more refined look for an over-the-knee, while the Lilla P dress is casual perfection, and is even reversible to a deep slate grey! With a jean jacket and a blanket scarf this look is incredibly versatile and comfortable.

Black leggings are a staple in the wardrobes of most D.C. area women, and even though there are haters, most of us love them for their flattering fit and versatility. Paired with a long cashmere brown vest, it’s a nice twist on a basic sweater. With a few delicate gold chains of varying lengths layered over a long cream tank, the theme of “long lines” is in full effect with this look.  An oversize Intropia sweater (this is actually a sweater dress that I sized down) is a no-brainer when the weather turns cold, and looks effortlessly chic. Pairing the leggings with an oversize vegan leather and knit vest is a different look, but given the length of the vest, it works. The draped leather detail in the front helps create that long line, while also providing some visual interest to a streamlined black look

Baby It’s Cold…No, Warm….Wait, Cold Outside! Transitional Jackets + Vests for Layering

Layering clothing is a must for our area.  I wake up every morning and plan my outfits and my outer wear pairings.  As much as I love investing in a new heavy coat, I wait…transitional jackets and vests can easily be layered and used effortlessly throughout our early and late fall.  Mornings are cool…afternoons warm…transitional jackets can easily be added or removed depending on the temperature.  You can simply switch your base layer from a tee, to a blouse, to a sweater.  Transitional layering is an art but as easy as paint-by-numbers, and the combinations are endless!

Elevate a basic white tee with a long, elegant, cashmere vest, or black leather vest and a shiny bauble!

And the boots?? Da bomb!

Always a fave, wear your black moto jacket with a feminine top that includes ruffles and tassels for a soft yet edgy look.

Different textures rock!  Black leather mixed with jersey knit is a terrific contrast…not to mention cozy accessories!

Olive is the new black!  This olive-colored faux suede draped jacket is a perfect neutral and great backdrop for tops that burst with color.

A cream-colored leather blazer adds a touch of class to jeans and would pair just as beautifully with a sheath dress or full skirt.

There is no rule on length for transitional jackets.  These light-weight, faux suede jackets are key! There is plenty of room for additional layers later in the season…comfy thick sweaters or even layer one of these beauties over a jeans jacket for a completely different look!

4 Denim Styles in Store Now! 10.18.16 Darby Rush

I have such fond memories of wearing my button fly 501 Levi’s in the 70’s and early 80’s.  I’d have to buy them two sizes too big because, being 100% cotton, they really shrunk!  Plus, they were super stiff when purchased.  But, wash after wash, they faded, became super soft, and eventually developed their own holes at the knees…yes, distressed jeans done naturally!  They also had their own version of “stretch.”  After they were washed, I’d have to lay down flat on my bed so I could shimmy the then tight jeans over my bum.  Then I would do walking lunges to stretch out the jeans to a comfortable fit.  So much work!  Denim has come a long way baby!

Boyfriend Jeans

If you are used to your beloved skinnies, boyfriend jeans may seem tricky to style especially if you are going for a polished look.  However, the roomy fit is why you will turn to them again and again!  Our Kut for the Kloth boyfriend jeans can equally pull off a retro bohemian trend or color-adverse minimalism.  Key accessories, the perfect proportion on top, and the right shoes to elongate your legs will deliver a fashionable and stylish outfit.  As an added bonus, Kut for the Kloth won’t break your bank.  Baggy ain’t so bad after all!

Classic Skinnies

There is no going back!  Skinnies are here to stay.  And why shouldn’t they?  They are EXTREMELY versatile!  Very Audrey Hepburn-esque when ankle skimming hems are paired with flats.  High heels, depending on your go to look, go equally well with long, ankle, or cropped hems, and all hemlines match perfectly with booties!  Long and lean, they are the only jeans that can be tucked into over-the-knee boots for on-trend street style.  No jean line does this better than Paige, the model all denim brands hope to emulate.

Bootcut Jeans

Where would we be without our bootcut jeans!  And bootcut is a myth…many of us wear them with our high heels!  Plus, they are universally flattering to all body types.  Depending on the wash, they can be dressed up for a night on the town, or worn with Nike trainers to the Diamond Club at a National’s game.  Our Hudson jeans, with the best pockets around, will satisfy your sophisticated self and your casual self while remaining unique and individualistic in all facets of your fashionable life.

High Rise Jeans

Kiskadee’s high rise jeans aren’t too high…they are just right! Please don’t call them mom jeans! High rise jeans won’t give you a muffin top or plumber’s crack and they hide belly bulges and front flab.  Plus, they keep shirts properly tucked-in, which we have all struggled with since the arrival of low-rise jeans!  With all these positives, it is easy to see why high rise jeans are trending to the top.  They go perfectly with slim button down blouses or clean and crisp cropped tops.  We have two versions in Kiskadee: Kut for the Kloth high rise boyfriend jeans and high rise Paige skinny jeans.  Both will be a perfect addition to your closet and contain multiple styling options for the fashionista in all of us.

All styles, all fits, from trendy to traditional, our styles will match every occasion, event, journey, and destination!

Culottes Are Back! 10.10.16 Darby Rush

Fashion forward icons have tried to come up with tons of excuses not to add culottes to their wardrobe.  They fall at a strange length.  “I don’t know what shoes to wear.” Or, “How do I find the perfect fit?”  However, this wide-legged gem has turned from a fad into the new hit staple with all seasoned fashionistas.

Stores are stocking culottes for yet another season which shows they have staying power and versatility.  Treat them exactly as you would pants!  There are weekend-ready knits, elegant evening alternatives, but our favorite culottes are leather!  You can wear them AND look cool, so give this trend a try!

Comfy Casual

Leather and cashmere go hand in hand for casual fall festivals, beerfests,  and football games! This beautiful forest green sweater is extremely comfortable, cozy, and oh so indulgent.  The fabric softens the structure of the leather adding a new dimension to the outfit.  Pair it with suede booties or even male-inspired loafers for a complete, on-trend look.

A Feminine Touch

Reminiscent of leather and lace, this stunning Nicole Miller top adds feminine flare to the sleek leather culottes.  The bare shoulders implies sex appeal and the knife pleat peplum provides a unique balance to the length of the culottes.   You don’t need to add much to this perfect outfit but simple jewelry and gorgeous open-toed, suede booties.

An Evening Out

culottes_black.jpg

Who needs a dress or a skirt when you have a spruced up pair of culottes?   Metallic gold is swirled throughout a muted field of vibrant flowers in this off the shoulder top by Nicole Miller.  Sophisticated yet whimsical, the top pairs well with wide culottes for an exquisite evening outfit.

Shoulders Are In!!! 10.04.16 Darby Rush

Shoulders are in! Slightly Bohemian, off-the-shoulder-tops are trending heavily this fall…it is one of the hottest looks this season and there is no reason why we shouldn’t jump in!  Baring shoulders screams confidence and sexiness…you look as cool as you feel.  The style, which is chic and fabulous on all bodies, can definitely be your friend this fall.

Great with Flares and Heels

This Bailey44 top, available in cream and black, exudes femininity.  The fully lined, velvet burn-out fabric lends a translucent texture and a unique flare. Simple gold accessories signal refinement while heels and white jeans elevate the look to absolutely stunning.

Yes to Cooler Weather

Did anyone say cashmere?  Gorgeous and butter soft, Nicole Miller’s off-the-shoulder top is magnificent.  The rich color, a deep forest green, recalls the natural beauty of fall.  The open neckline and vast skin can support just about anything…from a statement pendant to our delicate choker.  Pair with our fringe booties and you have a perfect outfit for all the fall festivals!

Date Night

Luxury at its best…Nicole Miller transforms sheer silk into a beautiful array of colors.  Metallic gold, rose, violet, and deep red blossoms flow throughout the top making it formal enough to wear to a wedding.  Although off-the-shoulder tops are considered a fuller fit, not only do they pair well with skinny pants, but they pair well with a fuller pant as seen here with our cropped Bailey44 pants. The outfit is elevated to an elegant, dressy and chic alternative to the LBD.

Give the Cold Shoulder

If you cannot see yourself in an off-the-shoulder top, or feel you need extra support by sporting a traditional (i.e., not strapless) bra, than the cold shoulder trend is for you.  It is essentially the same but you will not have to worry about any wardrobe malfunctions!  This simple cream top by Jūde will be your go-to all fall.  Perfect on its own, with statement jewelry, or adorned with colorful scarves, there are multiple ways to accessorize this stylish top!

There are so many ways to try this of-the-moment trend.  It is versatile, sophisticated, casual…whatever you want it to be!  How often does that happen in life?  You have nothing to lose and everything to gain…go for it!

Shorter Days and Longer Sleeves: The Case for the Fall Dress 10.06.16 Meg Lombardo

You’ve switched from an iced cold-brew to a PSL. You’ve at least thought about moving your tights from the back of your drawer to somewhere more accessible. And, your friends have already begun emailing about a family pumpkin patch visit. Fall is really, truly coming, but there’s still enough lingering sunshine and warm D.C. temps to hold off on fully committing to chilly weather dressing. This transitional season may be tricky to figure out, especially for work-wear, but let me present to you the ultimate one-piece dressing solution for your 9-5: the fall dress.

We fervently adopt one-piece dressing during the dog days of summer for the comfort, convenience, and style, so why not do the same for our fall routine? One-piece fall dressing keeps the morning routine as simple as possible as we wash off the last bits of vacation sand and get back into the fall grind. With the dress being a key component of this season’s wardrobe, it’s a no brainer!  Check out three of my top picks from Kiskadee that you can wear now and, by changing your accessories, into the coming months as the temperatures turn.

The Cindy dress is perfect for fall transitional dressing. The fitted top of this knit is balanced by a slightly fuller bottom (giving us a chance to work off the effects of our summer ros indulgence). Unexpected details like the inverted pleat and concealed pockets make this dress both flattering and functional, while the leather tipping at the end of the sleeves and around collar is the perfect cool weather trendy touch. Now, barelegged with wedges or pumps and later with tights and boots, booties, or riding boots, this dress will become a wardrobe workhorse.

This BCBG dress is a stunner.  Somehow, it seems to borrow from the trending military silhouette but at the same time evoke a cool-girl 70s vibe. It does all of this in an of-the-moment supple brown suede that’s perfect for the season. The flattering silhouette is created by distinct vertical lines, a banded waistline and collar, and an ever-so-slight A-line skirt. The front flap and side slit pockets add interest, but given the cut, fabric, and fit of this dress, little other adornment is needed. With strappy sandals now and with closed toe pumps and a long camel wool wrap coat later, this is a statement maker. Modern power dressing at its best.

This easy mock-neck swing dress, a more refined take on the traditional trapeze cut, is perfect to wear now if your office temperature feels more like fall than the outside temps do. Cozy and soft, the neutral color palette and easy-fitting silhouette allow the black leather accents on each sleeve to take center stage. Wear now with lace up wedges and later with tights and block-heeled black suede ankle boots and channel a mod, retro vibe.

We are a football-crazy nation.  We marvel at the brute strength possessed by the offensive and defensive lineman as they battle mano a mano, and we are mesmerized at the grace of wide receivers who leap into the air, catch a ball thrown like a bullet, and land with the elegance and athleticism of a ballet dancer. Whether you are a fan of professional football, college ball, or a parent watching from the bleachers at a high school game, dressing can be tricky as the sun goes down and a chill fills the air.  But you can dress appropriately for the weather – and be stylish – as you navigate the changing seasons and cheer your team to vict

Early fall can be quite toasty!  Sitting under an intense sun on a hard stadium seat sounds unpleasant until your team scores and heat dissipates as your mind turns to winning the game!  A simple, chic linen dress is the answer on a sunny day.  It is cool, breathable, wicks away sweat and the long sleeves provide sun protection.  Pair it with textured sandals and a simple gold choker for an on-trend ensemble.

As the sun dips behind the stadium you wish you had that extra layer.  This supremely comfy Lilla P tee shirt paired with black boyfriend jeans will allow you to participate in the stadium “wave” like a pro!  Add the beautiful scarf with multiple hues of deep blues and greens and you will have the extra layer needed to stay warm as you chant “D-Fense” until the bitter end.

Fall Transitional Staff Favorites 09.26.16 Darby Rush

Fall fashions are my favorite.  Every September I look forward to purchasing the massive Vogue, a 10-pound tome dedicated to showing all the fabulous upcoming fashion trends.  And no, I don’t buy it for the articles! I LOVE all the designer ads, which we know is about 75-80 percent of Vogue’s fall issue.  And of course I pour over each photo layout and focus on the beauty of the fabric, intricate workmanship, and incredible designs shown this season.

As Kiskadee’s fall fashions arrive, my staff and I “oooh” and “ahhh” over each piece.  We try them on, we covet them, and we each find our own perfect style.  Please enjoy our staff’s favorite transitional pieces…all available at Kiskadee!

Darby

“I love this top with the small, feminine ruffle detail! Our falls are so warm, sleeveless is perfect! And the taupe color will easily transition from your white jeans to denim (remember: white jeans are NOT just for summer anymore). When it gets a bit cooler, I look forward to throwing a cozy sweater over this outfit and I’ll be ready to go!!”

Tracy

“The faux suede gray shorts are amazingly comfortable. I’m ready to transition to fall colors and this pairing allows me too…even though our temperatures are not cooperating!”

Allison

“This gray, sleeveless turtleneck is SO me!  Slim and long enough to cover my bum, it is perfect over my white jeans.  The small leather buckle at the sides is a nice detail and I look forward to wearing it with a black leather bomber jacket as the weather cools down.”

Katherine

“I LOVE Tolani! Beautiful colors, design, and the fabric just flows with me — so young and carefree — but I really should mention the pockets…oh, how I love the pockets!”

Embrace the Vision of Tyler Böe 09.12.16 Darby Rush

Genuine, modern, refined…these are only a few of the adjectives used to define the chic designs by Tyler Böe.  Tyler Böe’s collection of contemporary sportswear is a line beloved by Kiskadee and our customers alike.  It is designed in the United States by Sam and Karol Böe, a husband and wife team who spent years in the garment industry before taking a leap of faith and started to collaborate on their own vision.  Their exclusive concepts begin in their Bedford, N.Y. studio and yet are shown locally in Annapolis, Maryland.

Color, pattern, and luxurious fabrics drive each design with an acute attention to detail.  This brilliant, graphic chevron tunic is a perfect example of the excellent innovation Tyler Böe imbues in each creation.  The tunic showcases stunning features including an inverted pleat, snap back cuffs, and a front placket.  Made of 100 percent silk, it can be dressed up or down for any occasion.

Each design is unique and this dress is no exception.  The camel and black design is reminiscent of ancient Greece yet also lends itself as an optical illusion.  Not to be out done, the fabric is structured yet forgiving, and the three-quarter sleeves are on-trend.  Pair with booties and a red bag for an eye-catching boardroom look!

Refinement at its best, this 100 percent silk tunic is as elegant as it is chic.  Again, you can see the signature Tyler Böe attention to detail.  The inverted pleat, optional snap back cuffs, and front placket suggest an ease of sophistication.  Here we show it with our cream Paige jeans and Kenneth Cole bootie for a causal look, yet it can be dressed up for an evening out on the town.

Tyler Böe is not only beautiful, but it is also one of our best priced lines where quality abounds.  The collection is constantly evolving, always fresh, smart, and stylish for the well-dressed, busy woman of today.

Timeless Quality at Kiskadee (No More Throw-away Clothing!) 09.07.16 Darby Rush

I admit it.  I have purchased plenty of clothing at big box stores and discount clothing stores.  I have used them to purchase school and play clothes for my children when they were little…absolutely no reason to purchase expensive clothes when they grow out of them so quickly!  As an adult, I have done the same thing for myself.  Let’s face it, many of these stores have cute clothing. I spy a t-shirt that is only $18…it is so inexpensive there is no need to try it on. I bring it home.  It doesn’t fit.  I don’t return it.  All of a sudden I have plenty of $18 t-shirts I have never worn.  This is called “throw-away clothing” and the cost adds up!

At Kiskadee we focus on quality and timelessness.  Truthfully, throwaway clothes aren’t cheap in the long run.  Massed-produced apparel has a “one-size-fits-all mentality” so the fit is horrible. Poorly made attire with thin material wears out faster.  If time equals money, then you are burning both by constantly replacing cheaply made clothing.  Being frugal doesn’t just mean saving money, it means spending your money wisely.

We like to think of clothing as an investment.  When clothing is more expensive one tends to pause and think, “Do I really want this?”  You devote real thought and consideration into the fit and fabric.  The purchase means more to you, and is not frivolous.  In other words, it was a good purchase and one you will wear for many years to come. Kiskadee clothing is timeless and we thought we would share some of our go-to favorites!

Host a Sip-and-Save Shopping Party! 09.06.16 Darby Rush

With the start of school, Kiskadee will soon be asked to support schools and other non-profits for inclusion in their annual fundraising auctions.  We are pleased to help others in our community by donating a Sip-and-Save shopping party! The winner of the shopping party receives a Kiskadee gift card, invites all of her friends, and we provide the refreshments! Attendees enjoy 20 percent off their purchase of full priced, in-stock items, and the Kiskadee staff can act as your personal stylist.  There is no better way to shop!

Luckily, not all shopping parties at Kiskadee have to be won through an auction.  Gather your entourage and have the entire store to yourselves for the ultimate boutique experience! What better way to enjoy a night out with the girls…chatting with your besties, trying on beautiful clothing, and modeling for your friends!  It is perfect for a bridal party, birthday party, your ladies tennis team, or just for fun…no excuse needed!

We are so privileged to live in such a wonderful community that has supported Kiskadee for many years.  Please let us help you by either a donation or planning an awesome evening with your friends sipping and saving the night away!

Fifty Shades of Purple 09.01.16 Darby Rush

Purple is such a rich, vibrant color. Regal and sophisticated.  It is associated with creativity, spirituality, and intuition. It varies in shades from lavender to magenta, eggplant to violet. However…it is one of those colors people either love or hate! Purple is the darling of designers and stylists alike because it adds a blast of color to any outfit. Believe it, you can mix this imperial color with metallics, jewel tones, camel, whites, animal prints…the list goes on and on.  Make purple your statement color of the season!

It Takes Guts

For some, purple can seem an intimidating color…it can be one of the more difficult colors to wear, even more so than yellow!  Confidence is key to wearing this brilliant color.  This classic wrap dress exudes power, certainty, coolness, and conviction.  And the fabric?  Like butter. Whether you are the Chairman of the Board of a Fortune 500 Company or CFO of your home and family, this dress will be a strong addition to any wardrobe.

It’s Sexy

As mentioned, it takes a certain amount of confidence to wear a fabulous purple frock.  Confidence lends its own sex appeal to everyone. But mixing purple with pink is on a different level itself! According to Wikipedia, “When combined with pink it is associated with eroticism, femininity, and seduction.”  Whoa!  It is all rockin’ in this dress by Julie Brown.  It is a textural, multi-colored sheath that exudes excitement, enthusiasm, exhilaration, and just plain fun!

It’s Funky

This Picasso like print is a geometric masterpiece.  It combines an eggplant shade of purple with burgundy, red, white, and orange to make the irregular cube design pop like a 3-D picture.  The ultra-modern look with transfer well into the office or lunch date with your friends all the while exuding a coolness only the color purple can convey!

It’s Simply Lovely

Violet is technically not a purple, it has its own spectral color on the visible spectrum of light, but it falls somewhere between purple and blue. It pairs beautifully with any neutrals, black, white, and nudes.  Here it is immersed among the intricate metallic threads of a beautiful brocade dress.  This dress will make a grand entrance at a special evening out with your other half or a cocktail party with friends.  It will become your go-to dress for all exceptional occasions!

The key is confidence when finding which shade of purple is right for you.  And don’t be bound by silly fashion rules (see our post “Are you a Fashion Rebel?”).  If you want to mix purple with red or turquoise or lime green, make that statement and see who follows your trend!

is airport style really a thing? 4 perfect on-the-go looks for fall, by Meg Lombardo

Recently, vogue.com featured a piece on French airport style. Victoria Beckham’s outfits at JFK, LAX, and other global airports are papped and praised (see above!). Hashtags on a photo of an influential fashion blogger suggests she is a paid spokesperson for a European airport. One thing is for certain: Airport Style is definitely a thing.

To me, the reason celebrity airport style is now tracked so closely has everything to do with relatability.  When photographed in an airport, many celebrities showcase a practical approach to style that makes them seem more “like us.”  They pair pieces that are simple, flattering, and easy to wear in an interesting way — pieces similar to those we might wear. Kiskadee’s take on airport style is just that — mix simple and easy-fitting pieces that allow for comfort while not sacrificing your own personal style. And with these new fall transition pieces, your options are endless to achieve the balance between style and comfort on a travel day.

Summer’s Last Soiree

Flowy Top + Skinny Jeans + Oversize Scarf + Booties

Skinnies with booties is a go-to look for me. These Paige Mid-Rise Skinnies have a good amount of stretch, and provide some light control, too. I highly recommend them for women with a curvier bottom. Rolled a few times and paired with a slightly heeled, natural color bootie, this look is the perfect base for fall’s cozy capes and oversized sweaters. A flowy top and black and white scarf to wrap over your shoulders (in case the plane is chilly) completes this breezy look.

Fall Harvest Weekend

Bomber Jacket + Layered Tee + Silk Tassel Scarf + Skinny Jeans + Booties

Carried over from spring and summer, the bomber jacket continues to trend into fall and is shown over everything from lace slip dresses to jeans. Blank NYC’s satin version in a versatile neutral is one of my favorites. It’s more flattering than a typical bomber thanks to its less boxy cut and the strategic addition of well-placed zippers. The tee underneath creates a longer line, while the scarf pulls all the colors together and adds interest with tassels. Streamlined suede booties and skinnies finish the look and nicely balance the volume on top.

Girls Getaway

Tunic Dress + Layered Scarf + Long Necklace + Booties

Both Tracy, a sales associate at Kiskadee, and I love the way the muted colors of this look blend to achieve the perfect neutral early-fall color palette. This look is slightly elevated, yet still comfortable, and would be perfect when heading from the airport to a casual lunch with friends or family gathering. The scarf adds interest while also providing some warmth, and the long necklace’s beads and sizeable stone provide just the right amount of pop. The booties add a slightly unexpected twist when worn with a dress, as well as some height.

Business Trip

Wrap Dress + Suede Wedges + Tote

Many times our travel doesn’t take us to a tropical island, but rather to a different location where the destination is a boardroom. In order to easily transition from the plane to the office, consider the Milo wrap dress from Julie Brown. Its forgiving fabric doesn’t wrinkle, and the rich plum shade is one of fall’s most popular.  A moderate-heel Schutz black wedge wrapped around the ankle and black tote finish the look, and can even carry you through after work cocktails feeling comfortably feminine and appropriate.

3 ways to spoil yourself rotten

We all need to spoil ourselves!  Life, as beautiful as it is, can get in the way and there are times we need to step back, relax, reassess, and re-emerge as the impressive goddesses we all are.  I’ve kept my list to a minimum so you can start spoiling yourself right away!

You know you want it.  You know you would wear it.  Buy it because you are spoiling yourself! This Nicole Miller Atelier top is stunning.  The pleated, high-neckline top ends in a beautifully detailed peplum that will pair perfectly with jeans for your night out with the girls, or pair it with a pencil skirt and a blazer that is perfect for the boardroom.

2)  More Retail Therapy

You have been eyeing that jewelry.  It would go with everything and more.  Make that investment in yourself and your wardrobe!  ADMK jewelry is handcrafted and only uses the finest semiprecious gemstones.  This necklace, ring, and earrings are made with Labradorite…a stone that glistens, gleams, and reflects multiple colors.

Relax after your shopping extravaganza.  Take it from Bellacara and their products from Fresh: the Sake soak, Brown Sugar Scrub, and Grapefruit Body Lotion will leave you feeling supremely pampered, relaxed, and ultimately refreshed.

summer stars: peasant blouse and lace-up sandals for an evening on the avenue

Don’t let the threat of September end your enjoyment of long summer days and nights.  Stretch the season out as loooong as you can!  Revel in the coconut-y smell of sunscreen, prepare for the onslaught of a brain freeze as you slurp frozen custard in front of The Dairy Godmother, and soak in the warmth of the weather before the beauty of fall descends upon us.  Don’t be shy; sip margaritas from Taqueria el Poblano or Los Tios late into the evening!

Few outfits say summer as much as the combo of billowy peasant blouses and lace-up sandals.  The Calypso top flows freely and won’t cling in sweltering temps (Which you will embrace, right? Summer is almost over!) and the lace-up wedges are comfy enough to stroll the night away.  Pair the top with our Paige cropped jeans or your own white linen shorts and prepare to enjoy all that Del Ray has to offer.  When fall does arrive, pair the top with denim jeans and suede booties. I look forward to seeing you on The Avenue sporting this iconic trend!

are you a fashion rebel? yes, you can mix cream + white

Rules, rules, rules!  Day in and day out, our many activities are decided by rules.  It could be obvious rules, such as laws by which we must abide, or more ambiguous rules set by society, such as those governed by fashion.  Luckily, many fashion rules have been thrown out the window over the past ten years. Some I love, such as pairing navy and black. Others, like the mixing of multiple patterns within an outfit, are simply are not my style — however I certainly appreciate the women who wear it effortlessly!

But how did we ever live without the pairing of cream and white?  Talk about an ambiguous, and may I say ridiculous, fashion “rule!”  The partnering of these two colors calls out refined chic and classy elegance. They can easily be worn for three seasons and the best part…there are virtually no rules for pairing the two.  Enjoy our suggestions or better yet, try them yourselves!

Cream Rises to the Top

Since white can wash out certain skin tones you may want to opt for cream or ivory on top.  Go for a fabulous flourish such as our fringed top by Nicole Miller.  It is pure eye candy!  It pairs well with our Paige jeans, giving off a rocker, chic vibe.  If you do opt for white on the bottom, wear a neutral shoe or even an animal print.

Still looking for the perfect, imperfect blend?  Try ecru.  The impeccable detailing of this top by Baily 44 lends a classic elegance to the ensemble.  Refinement continues when pairing the outfit with a stunning natural stone necklace, pearl bracelet, and flawlessly white Page skinnies.

White Hot on Top

Here we have our Paige distressed jeans in cream topped in pristine white by Chan Luu.  The sweet embroidery of the top paired with these dashing jeans will make people question if you’re an angel…or have a touch of the devil!  If you want to go bold add a beautiful necklace for a pop of color.

The classiness of this white, ruffled top by Drew will not be lost but emboldened by the color of our cream Paige jeans.  The necklace reflects the neutral color scheme with its soft shades and it adds a sense of sophistication.   Perfect for any situation…from lunch, to dinner, to shopping at Kiskadee!

While it may seem wrong to wear a color in two different shades, since they are in the same family, they look great together.  Still makes you nervous?  Add our suggested accessories or a pair of shoes that make a statement.  You will be a convert to this color scheme and who knows, you may begin to take more fashion risks and enjoy the outcome!

all tied up

No, this post is neither about the movie Fifty Shades of Grey, nor the sequel that’s in the works — this is Stylebook!  Rather, it’s about one of the biggest, and I would argue most wearable, trends of this past year that’s continuing strong into Fall/Winter 2016: the lace-up.

There is no way you could have missed this one. From tunics and denim chambray shirts to dresses that range from demure to daring, this trend has permeated women’s collections. Stylebook boutiques continue to carry numerous lace-up pieces from favorite designers such as BCBG, Frame Denim, and LACAUSA. Did you know, though, that when this trend began several years ago it began on the feet? Kiskadee is excited to begin carrying Schutz Shoes, one of the brands that helped kick start the lace-up trend in footwear!

The Brazilian brand is owned by Alexandre Birman, who was raised in a shoe family and designed his first shoe at the ripe old age of 12. Using silhouettes from his eponymous couture shoe line as inspiration, Schutz incorporates lace-ups into of-the-moment looks that aren’t the cost of a mortgage payment and could be worn in a variety of ways. One of the darling brands of fashion bloggers and influencers, Schutz also found a following among women who love sophisticated design, quality, and comfort at a moderate price point.

Kiskadee has three amazing Schutz styles in store that are fashion-forward but also very wearable.  They are perfect for the “now and later” approach to transition dressing, too, as these styles will look just as good with a summer floral as they will with distressed jeans and an oversize comfy sweater when the temperatures cool.

The Darby

I think the name says it all on this one, and it’s no surprise that this is Schutz’s best-selling shoe! The reasonable three-inch block heel and padded foot bed makes the shoe so comfortable. Textured calf hair, studs, and leather lace-up detailing give it a definite edge and very modern feel. I own these, and they are as versatile as they are comfortable. Check our recent Summertime Blues post to see The Darby worn with summer staples.

The Gracy

The rich chocolate hue of the Gracy, referred to as Hot Coffee by Schutz, is simply sublime. Still a block heel, it’s considerably higher at 4.5 inches, and the lines are a significantly more defined. The lace-up in the front adds some daintiness and gives a feminine twist to an otherwise powerful shoe. This would look terrific with everything from fall’s crop baby boot-cut jeans to a clean-lined sheath dress.

The Bibian

I’m not sure that a better mix of wearable and trendy exists in the form of a shoe. The rich black color, the supple suede material and the wearable 2-inch wedge heel juxtapose nicely against a sexy high vamp that leads to a pointy toe on one end and on the other ties multiple times around the ankle.  The Bibian could be worn easily with everything from skinny jeans, to an A-line dress, to wide crop pants.

With more than 80 stores in Brazil, Schutz currently has just two brick-and-mortar locations in the U.S., Beverly Hills and Manhattan. I’ve been to the Schutz Beverly Hills store and it was a lovely shopping experience.  Streamlined and minimal in mostly white, the store certainly shows off the sizeable collection of everything from summer espadrilles and slip-ons to stiletto lace-ups. The sales associates are extremely knowledgeable and friendly, too.  If you happen to be shopping in Beverly Hills or New York City I recommend stopping in…but be forewarned that it will be nearly impossible to walk out empty handed!

Tips for Wearing Lace-Ups Comfortably, Courtesy of Darby

1) Loosen the laces beginning from the top of the shoe first, the part closest to your toes. Then, work your way down your foot towards the ankle. This will expand the laces and allow you to insert and remove your foot from the shoe relatively easily.

2) Stand up first and then tighten and tie the lace-ups. This allows you to get your foot set so that you can properly and comfortably adjust the laces. If you try to do this while sitting down once you stand up the placement of your foot and snugness of the laces may not be just right.

3) Wrap the lace-ups around your ankle, or slightly further up your leg, however it feels most comfortable for you. I tend to wear mine wrapped around my ankle several times, but if you feel more comfortable wrapping a bit further up your leg, do it! There is no right or wrong way to wrap or tie!

how to pull off horizontal stripes

We’ve all heard it before: horizontal stripes make you look wider. But is that really true? Horizontal stripes have been a staple in designer collections, including those traditionally seen as preppy and beachy, so why would designers continue to use them if they are universally unflattering?  There are complementary ways to pull off horizontal stripes, and my personal top three are below!

1) Pick a Wide or Narrow Stripe

Either very wide or very narrow stripes are safe bets when first playing with horizontal stripes.

On one hand, wide stripes look more like color blocking, rather than a true stripe.

On the other hand, narrow stripes appear as if they are a solid color.  Take a navy and white narrow striped dress – from afar, it will look much more like a solid gray!

2) Geometric Stripes

A subtle stripe can be a narrow stripe, or, if you want a more exciting look, it can be a geometric pattern with hints of stripes.

Take this Glam dress for example.  At first glance, it looks like a trendy geometric pattern.  But upon further examination, it really is a pattern of stripes, each row with intricate, eye-appealing details.

The v-necks on both of these dresses draw the eye down, making the wearer look long and lean.

3) Pick a Shape that Complements You

Finally, when you are going out of your comfort zone with a striped dress, pick a shape that is ultra-complementary.

A-line skirts look good on most body types.  It is not clingy and is super structured – can you say forgiving?!

If you are nervous about it, try a look that will always be flattering:  A vertical or diagonal stripe.  These never-fail options look great on every figure!  Alternatively, you could add layers below or on top of your stripes – a solid colored vest, a white button-up – to tone down the outfit.  Experiment to find which style is best for you!
